U11 Premier: 7-a-side: St Joseph’s Beavers 5 Temple Villa 1
The spectators who turned out for this early morning encounter in Monksland on Sunday morning were treated to a great game with excellent performances from both teams. The early part of the 1st period saw chances come and go for both sides as defences dominated the play. After seeing his earlier effort unluckily hit the post Ruairi Lenehan put the home side in front on 11 minutes as he completed a great move with a fine finish. St Joseph’s took hold of the game in the second period with some excellent teamwork culminating in a free kick which was superbly struck by Ruairi Lenehan for his second of the game. A short time later, with Villa on the offensive, they were unlucky not to reduce the deficit as they hit the post after a fine attacking move. Villa were then caught on the break as a neat passing move involving Paddy O’Brien and Cian Mulvey resulted in the ball being fed through to Keelan Kilroy who took his chance well to put St Joseph’s three up. Villa did not give up and made no mistake when then were awarded a penalty at the end of the second period. With the score at 3-1 going into the third period the next goal was going to be crucial and to the delight of the home crowd it came from Ruairi Lenehan as he completed an excellent hat-trick after a brilliant solo run. It was end to end football for the last 10 minutes during which Alex Francis went close for the home side before a great team performance was finally rounded off by who else but man of the match Ruairi Lenehan with his forth goal of the day. Well done lads on another great display.
U13 SFAI Cup: St Joseph’s 6 Willow Pk Reds 1
St Joseph’s started their cup campaign with a comprehensive victory in Monksland on Sunday afternoon. A steady first half performance saw St Joseph’s go into the break 2-0 up with well taken goals from Fergal Lennon and Mark Shine. Early in the second half the home teams lead was halved as Willow pulled one back. The visitors mini revival was short lived however, as St Joseph’s then took control with two goals from Captain and man of the match, Cathal Callinan. With solid displays from Noel Cotton and Killian Bannon in the centre of the Joseph’s defence there was no way back for the battling Willow team whose fate was finally put beyond doubt with goal number five from Connor Samuels. The home side were not satisfied to just cruise into the next round, however, as they ended the match with a great move culminating in Cathal Callinan setting up Colin Cotton for goal of the game - a powerful drive into the top corner. Congratulations lads and good luck in the next round.
